Modern society is rapidly becoming more interconnected and complex, and criminal investigations are reaching the limits of what the conventional, compartmentalized police organization can handle. To tackle all manner of "borderline cases" that existing divisions cannot adequately address, including murders involving cybercrime and international drug trafficking, a special unit under the direct authority of the Superintendent General of the Metropolitan Police Department was established: the SCU (Special Cases Unit).
The SCU consists of five professionals, each possessing a different specialized skill. Leading them is Yuki Shinjiro, the team's enigmatic captain and a former member of Public Security. The other members are Yagami Tasuku, a former First Investigation Division detective with an extraordinary "eye"; Asahina Yu, an ambitious detective determined to become the first woman to head the Criminal Investigation Bureau; Mogami Kota, the team's youngest member and an expert in information technology; and Wataya Ryosuke, a seasoned investigator and master of hand-to-hand combat.
Faced with "borderline cases" that are difficult for any single division to handle and liable to slip through the cracks of conventional investigations, such as cybercrime-related murders and international drug smuggling, the five use their respective abilities to pursue the truth.
